How to plan a run around the weather
Updated October 27, 2026
A run at the right hour can feel much easier than the same run an hour earlier. You don't need to be a meteorologist: four numbers from the hourly forecast, checked against the time you actually have, are enough to choose well.
Use the hourly forecast, not the daily summary
A daily forecast that says "28 °C, 30% rain" hides the shape of the day. The hourly view shows when the heat peaks, when showers are likely and when the wind drops. Check it the evening before or the morning of your run, and again shortly before you leave, because forecasts change.
The four numbers that matter most
- Feels-like temperature: how warm or cold it will actually feel. Running makes you warm up fast, so a cool hour is often more comfortable than a mild one.
- Chance of rain: a low percentage for the hours you'll be out matters more than the daily total.
- Wind: a light breeze helps on hot days; a strong wind makes everything harder, especially on an out-and-back route.
- Sky: full sun on a hot day adds heat; cloud cover can make the same temperature feel milder.
Start from the hours you actually have
The "best" hour of the day is no help if you're at work. Write down the time you're free, look only at those hours, and pick the best stretch inside them that is long enough for your run plus a warm-up.
If the hour you can start right now is nearly as good as the best one later, go now. A good run you actually do beats a perfect one you postpone.
Adjust the run, not just the time
- Hot: run earlier or later, slow your pace, take water, and choose shade.
- Cold: dress in layers you can open, and start with the wind in your face so it's behind you on the way home.
- Wet: a short, light shower is rarely a reason to cancel; thunderstorms are.
- Dark: wear something visible and carry a light.
Let WalkiNova do the checking
WalkiNova reads your local hourly forecast and scores each hour out of 100 from feels-like temperature (up to 40 points, best around 19 °C), chance of rain (up to 25), wind (up to 20, full marks up to 8 km/h) and sky. It then picks a 30-minute to 2-hour window inside the activity hours you set, and tells you when starting now is nearly as good as waiting.
Tap the score to see how it was worked out, then start a run, walk, hike or ride and track it with GPS.
